Very happy that the 10 Lost Words/Local Wildlife M Very happy that the 10 Lost Words/Local Wildlife Mosaics are all installed on the Bedford Road Mosaic Trail in E17. These 10 beautiful works of art are now sparkling in the sunshine and rain 24/7 for all to see and enjoy.
These 10 mosaics (chosen by the community) are not only beautiful and colourful, but also educational and full of rich details and textures. Catherine Clark designed 10 beautiful compositions based on the 10 local wildlife themes and it is wonderful to see them all sparkly and at home in their chosen locations. Many of our mosaics celebrate wildlife and all of our mosaics have community at their heart, incorporating community handmade tiles. It was very interesting to learn that we are losing words because we’re not using them. Just like we are losing wildlife by not caring for it. These mosaics were inspired by a wonderful book, Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. I do hope you get over to do the Bedford Road Mosaic Trail and appreciate their creations, before or after nipping in to neighbouring Lloyd Park to enjoy the abundant nature there, as well as the creativity of William Morris in the gallery set in the park. It’s a lovely mosaic trail for adults and children. Massive thanks to all that took part and especially to Angela for orchestrating it, Aiden for putting the frames up and the whole Artyface team. #community #mosaic #e17 #walthamstow #words #lostwords #nature #wildlife #park #local #bat #newt #rowan #butterfly #bramble #mushroom #funghi #damselfly #bee #dandelion #goldfinch
This beautiful mosaic is based on William Morris’ tapestry of Epping Forest called ‘The Brook’. Displayed on Church Hill E17 alongside over 10 others, all celebrating Epping forest, William Morris and the Arts & Crafts. @morrisgallery is only a 15 minute walk from these mosaics.
This new addition was made to honour the life of Emily who was a pupil at Walthamstow School for Girls.

Thank you to Emily’s mum Renata for fundraising and commissioning the project, also to Walthamstow School for Girls and London Borough of Waltham Forest for their financial contributions and support. Also big thanks goes to Smiles Glass for the mirror, Andy from Ardex/Bal for the award winning tiling and to Ardex for the adhesive and grout. Huge thanks to all that made tiles and to everyone that helped with the design and making, and all the Artyface team. #mosaic #williammorris #epping #forest #family #friends #walthamstow #oak #brook #stream #flowers #ceramic #flow
Bedford Road Mosaic Trail, Walthamstow: Lost Words Bedford Road Mosaic Trail, Walthamstow: Lost Words and Local Wildlife - ten mosaics

In urban environments (like London) we spend less time connected to nature. This is an issue for so many reasons, not least because we will not enjoy and care for what we don’t know.
“There’s all kinds of nature right on our doorstep if we stop and look,” explains Walthamstow resident Angela McDermott. We are also losing some words to describe nature as we use them less. The words and nature depicted in these ten mosaics aim to illustrate, educate and intrigue as well as celebrate our ecosystems and biodiversity.
This trail of ten mosaics is on Bedford Road E17, adjacent to Lloyd Park and the William Morris Gallery. Just like real wildlife, you will need to walk and explore to see what you can spot.

Thank you to generous funders William Morris Big Local, London Borough of Waltham Forest and to Aiden Garroty for supporting the installation. Also big thanks to all who took part and all the Artyface supporters and volunteers, donors and cheerleaders. This colourful and site specific mosaic project is a resident-led community art project that was begun in 2023 and completed in 2025. Inspired by The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane & Jackie Morris and the National Park City movement

This beautiful mosaic is based on William Morris‘s tapestry of Epping Forest called The Brook. It is the most recent addition to over ten mosaic on Church Hill E17 all celebrating William Morris and the Arts & Crafts. This mosaic was made to celebrate the life of Emily who was a pupil at Walthamstow
School for Girls and went on to study fashion. The image her family chose for the design is a reminder of the many happy bike rides and walks they took in the forest. Emily’s family and friends made all the blue tiles in the surround, pressing meaningful objects in and carving personal designs. The photographic transfers are images from her sketchbook she was a very talented artist . Thank you to Emily’s mum Renata for fundraising and commissioning the project, also to Walthamstow School for Girls and to London Borough of Waltham Forest for their financial contributions and support. Also big thanks goes to Smiles Glass for the mirror, and Andy from Ardex/Bal for the award winning tiling and to Ardex for the adhesive and grout. Big thanks to all that made tiles and to everyone that helped with the design and making, and all the Artyface team. It was an honour to make this mosaic for Emily’s family to remember her and her love for the forest
" Thank you to all the people involved in the process of creating this beautiful tribute mosaic for my beloved, forever missed daughter Emily.
Thank you to all the people of goodwill who made kind donations and helped me to raise funds .“
Renata , Emily's mum
