Time & Talents mosaic, The Old Mortuary, St Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, London SE16 4JE.
This mosaic was made with and for this wonderful community centre, Time & Talents, in Rotherhithe, an historically rich corner of London. The love, care and kindness shown to all and felt by those who find fun and connections here, shines through in this ceramic mosaic.
We loved working on this ode to the local area, rich in history, people, past and present, activities, feelings and events.
Tiles were made at the community centre during their summer fete and assembled at our riverside studio at Trinity Buoy Wharf. You can literally read this mosaic: zoom in on the photos or do go and visit! The mosaic celebrates the rich diversity and layers of life in this unique pocket of London.
Huge thanks to all that made tiles and took part, as always we made the project accessible to all ages and abilities. Also to Bex and Diane, Devon and Ann and all the team at Time & Talents.
Big thanks to the Artyface Community Art team as always, Catherine Clark for the wonderful drawing of our ideas and pulling together a great design. To Laimons Grinsberg, Rebecca Tyndall, Esme Orssich and Eniko Leanyvari for their hard work on this too.
Rotherhithe sits near the mouth of the Rotherhithe Tunnel and on the banks of the Thames River. It would be great to see more of these in Southwark, South London! Such rich history and culture, places of interest, people of note and things to do!
“As a family we’ve always loved discovering Maud Milton mosaics on school buildings and train stations when out and about in the city. We were so pleased to discover she was running drop-in workshops right in our own neighbourhood. It was so easy to contribute to this genuinely meaningful community art project with a lasting and beautifully crafted outcome and such a great way to bring people together to make a collective artwork. One that celebrates the neighbourhood, connecting people, all of us sharing local knowledge, folklore and stories, while we worked under the patient guidance of Maud’s team in a calming atmosphere. All ages, all kinds of people.
We are now so proud to have our work be part of our local community in the finished mosaic at Time & Talents. It’s something the kids will remember in time to come – a shared moment printed and sealed forever.
Many community art projects we have joined in with in the past seems like afterthoughts – the outcome is meaningless and the experience is quickly forgotten. But this was the real deal, welcoming, inclusive, educational, and right on our doorstep. Thanks Maud and the Artyface.”
