Lyle Park Mosaics: Thames River Path, East London, E16.
To celebrate 100 years of Lyle Park, Royal Docks East London, Ballymore Limited commissioned us to create four vibrant mosaics for the Thames River Path, East London, E16 2SX .
The largest is particular to Lyle Park itself, with a majestic swan, the date the park opened and the date we created the artwork, its centenary. The three smaller roundels also feature River Thames birds.
We worked with a local primary school Britannia Village Primary School. The pupils made tiles in clay that we fired and glazed for the borders. As always, community involvement was at the heart of the project.
The mosaics celebrate the local wildlife the local river and encourage local people to learn and appreciate the birds that they might see in this area. The art works sparkle in the light, shining with their colours and shimmering like the water they celebrate.
“I have been trying to commission Maud on a project for years – and was thrilled when the stars aligned and we were able to partner in celebration of the Lyle Park centenary. In clay we have captured the beauty of the riverside – seeing the shimmer of the tiles in the sun is most fabulous experience and they bring joy to all who see the trail.”
Jennifer Ball, Engagement Consultant, Ballymore Ltd
Big thanks to Jennifer Ball for all her dedication organising the project. Also huge thanks to everybody that made tiles, helped to assemble the mosaics, make the metal frames, grout and install the mosaics. As always a supreme team effort!
These mosaics are on the Thames Path walkway at Royal Docks East London E16 2SX. The nearest station is West Silvertown DLR. They can be enjoyed by the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Perfect!
