Fox Primary School, Notting Hill, London
Fox primary are passionate about the environment, so when an opportunity came up to work with Maud Milton at Artyface, they knew that a large scale mosaic project involving the year 6 children was important. They decided to do seven mosaics, one for each year group in the school at the time. Each mosaic would symbolise a key element of conservation and environmentalism that was important to Fox and its community. The seven themes were biodiversity, reforestation, travel, green energy, food, water and consumerism. Each year, the theme is fully explored by the children before they set to work on seeing the project visualised.

Each mosaic incorporates design and visual ideas from the children of the class, alongside handmade tiles, words as well as decorative elements. The children are involved in each mosaic, from its conception to actualisation. First, the children create designs which are all sent to be drawn from my Maud’s team. The design is finalised between school and Artyface, before the children create stamps to press into clay tiles. These tiles are sent to Maud to fire and glaze. When the frame is ready, Maud and her team come back into school and the children add tiles in the art room at Fox. As the mosaic is installed by Maud and her team, groups of the year group join to support.
“We are super proud of these mosaics. Always a challenge to design something beautiful and attractive on the themes which, thanks to the pupils ideas and Catherine’s amazing design skills, we have created. This series of beautiful street mosaics celebrate the local farmers market, green transport, reforestation and so much more! Available for the whole community to enjoy, they are a joy to look at with their sparkling colours, reflective mirror, gorgeous glazed tiles and details from the pupils designs on their mini-masterpieces. We look forward to our Fox Ecology Mosaic every year. ”
