Four exciting new community-made mosaic roundels have been created for Worthing Train Station as part of the Station Approach works, commissioned by West Sussex Council.  These went up in January 2025 and they celebrate the rich history, beautiful landscape and seaside of this vibrant town. Assembled using tiles pressed into by 250 people in workshops in Colonnade House and at St Andrew’s C of E Secondary School.   The Worthing roundels are enriched with photographic transfer tiles designed and made with Maud and Alice Mara, with pupils at the school also submitting photographs to fit Maud’s brief. Alice, who lives in Worthing, is an established artist on the national and international field, and she made the photo’s into transfers and applied them to Maud’s bespoke tiles in a workshop with St. Andrew’s pupils who enjoyed learning all about the processes.

The Worthing Roundels showcase the inspiring architecture, landscapes, wildlife, culture and community of this town and look amazing 24/7 , free to all to appreciate and enjoy. We hope you like them!

“The Worthing Roundels are heartwarmingly beautiful, rich with local history and celebrating all things Worthing. We are super proud of them and how they were created. We liased with the community and commissioners, reaching out to St Andrew’s School, Alice Mara, Colonnade House and many members of Worthing Community: we love to build new bridges between places and people creating partnerships that live on after the project is complete. Especially poignant are the meanings in the tiles that people of all ages and abilities made with us, using toys and jewellery and personal items from relatives no longer alive, alongside other fun, beautiful and meaningful words and designs. We think these 4 mosaic roundels , designed to be read and wondered over, reflect a vibrant, exciting and beautiful seaside town and they are a great addition to Worthing Rail Station, a long-term legacy looking lovely 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, come rain or shine. We look forward to your selfies and social media images – please tag us on instagram and we will share. Also you can see the processes and workshops on our social media.”
Maud Milton, founder of Artyface Community Art in 1999, lead artist

As a resident of Worthing and an artist that has collaborated with Maud and Artyface for years, I am very honoured to have my photographic transfer tiles on a Worthing Station Roundel. Alway excited to collaborate with community groups and I was also honoured to inspire the next generation of artists through taking a transfer workshop  at St Andrews. This is a very worthy project for Worthing and one that puts Worthing Train Station on the artistic map as the mosaic roundels are much loved and appreciated by so many locally, nationally and worldwide! I am proud to be a part of it!
ALICE MARA Artist and Worthing Resident

“The mosaics, created as part of the wider Railway Approach improvements, are a brilliant community art project and are an asset to the local area. Maud was able to reach over 250 members of the community through a community art workshop and school visits which resulted in four wonderful roundels that celebrate Worthing. It was great to have the input of local artist Alice too, also working with local secondary pupils. We continue to receive lots of brilliant feedback from the community who both participated and who have seen them in Worthing!”
Emma Verrinder, Project Lead, West Sussex Council
