Beaconsfield Mosaic Trail, Buckinghamshire, HP9.

A total of 9 mosaics around the town of Beaconsfield, dedicated to our key workers for their service during the two lockdowns and to pay tribute to the people of Beaconsfield who pull together during difficult times.

The trail has been devised by Creative Partnerships Beaconsfield, a local charity that is bringing people out of isolation and releasing new skills into the area. So far, 1500 residents have taken part in tile decorating workshops between July 2022 and March 2024. Every tile is a mini masterpiece.

The mosaics in the trail and locations are:
Goldfinches and Cherry Blossom by Waitrose
Red Kites at Beaconsfield train station
Sapphire Blue Angel by St. Michael’s church, new town
The Doves at St. Thomas’s church in Holtspur where they have a cafe called The Dove Cafe
The Swifts by the post office
The Angel, outside the new medical centre on the A40
Large Roundel, outside the library

We have been working with Maud Milton since the end of 2021 to bring our community together to make mosaics. It all started as a way of thanking our key workers for their selfless service during the Covid lockdowns. Too often on lower wages, these people put their wellbeing on the line to keep life going for us and we wanted to pay tribute to their bravery.

Our very first mosaic was an angel under a rainbow, the symbol of hope during the pandemic. Fittingly it was on the wall of a new surgery in Beaconsfield. The staff, doctors, nurses, patients and admin staff helped make it. Many people comment on how much it cheers them up as they enter and exit the building. One of the many beautiful things about this work is that it celebrates heroes, including everyone that can see themselves reflected in the many mirror tiles.

When we realised people were keen on the idea of exploring art as a thank you, we formed a committee then turned into a charity. Our goal would be to bring people together,  out of isolation, and use the arts to release more skills into the area and bolster accessibility to the creative arts around our town.

So far nearly 2000 people have come together to make 10 mosaics, three are being completed as we speak.

Workshops have been arranged around the town for young and old. It has always been important to include those who are more vulnerable. This could be the elderly, disabled, patients, people managing pain, children with learning difficulties, refugees or those on low income.

Maud Milton’s mosaics can be enjoyed as a trail. Come and walk around the lovely new town and admire five mosaics that span out from the railway station. We have created a map that teaches you about the history of the town and includes quiz questions to answer as you weave your way around the town to visit all five pieces. The map is available at the library, station and Waitrose. and are available on this page as a downloadable PDF. You can cycle or walk the trail and it is also accessible on mobility scooters.

A second trail featuring more mosaics is being developed for the Beaconsfield New Town.

Again and again, people tell us how much they love not just the finished mosaics that brighten our streets, but the joy of creating them together.
